Never Delaying Gratitude

By Tom Kurtz

Pat Kelsey, the head coach of the Louisville Cardinals Mens basketball team has a maxim that he claims defines the culture of his program: “never delay gratitude”. In that same vein, I owe a profound statement of gratitude to Coach Kelsey and the players and staff of Louisville Basketball.

I was fortunate to attend a high school with a vibrant athletic culture. The bonds I forged with my classmates were strengthened on the field and in the student section. Assignments seemed a little less monotonous when I had a Friday night football or basketball game to look forward to. The honor I felt in representing Owensboro Catholic in public was reinforced by the pride in our competition. When choosing a college, I knew that a culture like this was a must.

But then I decided on the University of Louisville. While I was quickly swept up in the excitement of Coach Brohm’s thrilling debut football season, I dreaded the five-alarm fire that was UofL basketball. The once towering program lay in the basement of the league. The historic leadership of the legendary Denny Crum had been replaced with abject failure and cheap prevarications. The pride of the commonwealth and the standard of excellence for generations was dying a painful death.

At the end of my freshman year, however, came the promise of revival, or “reviVille”, under the stewardship of the confusingly energetic Pat Kelsey. I had my reservations. Could a mid-major figure who wasn’t even our first choice rebuild a program with nothing but enthusiasm and the transfer portal? And if he most certainly couldn’t do it immediately, what would the first year look like?

One year later, Coach Kelsey and his unit have redefined my loyalty and appreciation of the University and the city of Louisville. After a handful of stinging injuries and defeats, the team came roaring back in the new year and the KFC Yum! Center became my favorite place to retreat from the snowy nights and the academic stress of the semester. I’ve become nothing short of addicted to the energy of the arena and have found proud camaraderie in the front row of the Ville’ns student section. Even anticipating the small things, like checking the latest AP Poll in Monday Latin class, waiting at the TARC stop to catch the northbound bus to the game, or taking a break from studying to tune into an away game, provided a dose of school pride and excitement that will fuel my memories of this school forever. While the season has come to an unfortunate end, I will soon count down the days until the next tip-off. In the meantime, to Coach Kelsey and the players and staff of the 2024-2025 basketball team: Thank You.
