Time Marches On

By Dyllan Tipton

'Father Time remains undefeated,” declared Senator McConnell as he announced his decision to step down as Leader of the Republican Senate Caucus after nearly two decades in the role.

Like Senator McConnell, my own time has come to step into the next chapter. Though I graduate this May, I know the McConnell Center will always remain a home for me. I’ve only had the honor of being part of the McConnell Center for four years, yet it feels like the time has flown by in the blink of an eye.

Just yesterday, it seems, I was riding in a car with my fellow McConnell Scholars, headed toward Carter Caves State Resort Park in Eastern Kentucky for our first annual retreat. I remember sitting there, excited and nervous about the future that lay ahead.

These past four years have been nothing short of extraordinary, and I could write a novel about all my experiences. I’ve had the privilege of meeting U.S. senators, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, distinguished professors from across the country, and countless other remarkable individuals. I’ve studied Plato’s RepublicAll the King’s Men, the works of C.S. Lewis, Marcus Aurelius and Alexis de Tocqueville, and so many more. I’ve traveled to Russell Kirk’s Piety Hill, the White House in Washington, D.C., the Colosseum in Rome, the Parliament in London, and Arthur’s Seat in Scotland. I’ve served communities across Kentucky and learned from some of the finest professors, especially our own McConnell Center Director, Dr. Gregg and the rest of the staff, who have poured so much into our class these past four years.

Nothing can truly prepare you for the experience the McConnell Center offers. As far as I know, no other program has achieved so much in shaping young leaders. If you’re a high school student in Kentucky reading this, I strongly encourage you to apply. You will not regret it.

The McConnell Scholarship, if you invest yourself fully, can open doors you never imagined: law school, medical school, business, education—whatever path you choose. You’ll be supported every step of the way. We now have hundreds of distinguished alumni making an impact across Kentucky, the United States, and around the world.

One of the greatest gifts of this program is the tight-knit community it creates from your very first day through the end of your undergraduate years. You don’t just make friends—you become family. The relationships you build here will last a lifetime.

As for me, I hope to lead a life filled with learning and leadership. I truly love Kentucky, and I hope to spend the rest of my days in our Commonwealth. There are so many roads life can take, and I don’t yet know exactly which one I’ll travel. But I do know this: I will carry the keys the McConnell Center has given me every step of the way.

For Kentucky. From Kentucky.
