Isolated in Mecosta, Michigan

The McConnell Scholars’ trip to the ancestral home of conservative thinker, Russell Kirk, ranks among the highlights of my semester.  Looking back and considering all of the complex, life-changing ideas that we had the opportunity to explore, I realize that I could write a book on their application and the changes they have inspired me to consider. Unfortunately, given the opportunity to publish a blog post rather than a full-length manifesto, discussing some of the small pleasures we enjoyed will have to suffice.
Over that Labor Day weekend, I forget my phone charger in Louisville.  Dr. Gregg quickly proclaimed that this was probably the best thing that could have happened to me. Of course, I disagreed, noting the constant stream of emails and messages I felt I needed to manage. As often happens, the great Dr. Gregg’s wise counsel proved to be absolutely accurate (don’t let this go to your head) and the result was a weekend living in a simpler, more thoughtful and vivid time.
The McConnell Scholars stayed in a small bed and breakfast located on a farm in the middle of Mecosta, Michigan.  No lights from neighbors, cars, or nearby towns were visible. With nothing but the stars to light our surroundings – and given my lack of electronic communication – we were isolated from the world and left to amuse ourselves with discussions about Russell Kirk, ghost stories, and friendly conversations about our summer.

This trip was a rediscovery of the peaceful side of life, away from the chaos of work and class. I had forgotten how much I appreciated the opportunity to relax with a clear head, good friends, and a good book. Experiences like this are something that few people are able to have, especially when we are told we should strive to be busy and productive at this point in life. I am truly grateful for opportunities like this and would encourage anyone to step back, consider big ideas, and take a few moments for yourself.
Travis Wilson is a sophomore McConnell Scholar from Boone County, Kentucky. He is studying political science, economics and history at the University of Louisville.
