What Makes Life Worth Living

Sidney Cobb
Class of 2019
Last semester, in my art class we discussed why art was important. We concluded that art and creativity were a big part of find joy and inspiration in our lives. When taking this class, I was struggling to find meaning and happiness in my life. I had become so tied up in school work and résumé building that I no longer stopped to enjoy what I loved. In the class, we created this list of all the people and things that inspire us and I use it as a reminder whenever I get down, as you read this, I challenge you to make your own list and read it when you are feeling uninspired.
  • Someone who has influenced your life in many ways. You don't have to know this person, nor does it matter if the person you name is real or fictional. They should be someone who can really turn your mood around
    • My mom, Elizabeth Bennett
  • A hero or heroine - someone whose work and approach to life you really admire. It can be someone of cultural and/or political importance
    • Sandra Day O’Connor
  • A piece of music or a full album that, no matter how many times you listen to it, is always engaging
    • Glass Animals, How to be a Human Being
  • A song that you love so much that it stands head and shoulders above any other
    • Cigarette Daydreams, Cage the Elephant
  • A field or subject area that you love so much that some people might even say you're a little obsessed with it. It's so important that you can't even break it down into specific parts - it's just the whole thing. It might be something that other people don't particularly care about (or may even actively avoid!)
    • Christopher Nolan films
  • A book or piece of writing that is influential in your life in some way, along with its author
    • The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls
  • An actor whose work always engages you
    • Eddie Redmayne
  • An influential solo musical artist whose work is a constant in your life
    • Ed Sheeran
  • Your favorite item on the menu at your favorite place to eat
    • Watt’s Grocery, flounder with potato salad and Swiss char
  • Something specific about the physical presence of a person you love
    • Watching someone you love being fully engaged in an activity or hobby they enjoy
