Foreign Leadership

Yesterday we had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India (2002-2007). He began his career as a premier aerospace engineer and then pursued public service, spearheading India's rocket technology programs.

Dr. Kalam opened with 10 principles that he believes are necessary to create a better global society. For example, he mentioned lessening the gap between wealthy and poor nations and also suggested more open sharing of technology and information.

We then entered into a Q and A session with Dr. Kalam. The topics ranged from particular issues in India, the role of global organizations in improving the world, political ideology, and leadership. Dr Kalam gave very accurate answers, many times including a personal anecdote to support his opinions.

To end the session he led scholars in a "call and response" session of a motto that Dr. Kalam subscribes to. In these phrases the former President showed that he believed that "righteousness in the heart" could lead to "harmony in the home," which will ultimately lead to "peace in the world."

Dr. Kalam's visit with us showed an idealism and optimism that I wasn't expecting from such an accomplished scientist. Nevertheless, his insightful wisdom, joyful presence, and uplifting words really brightened the day for me and many of my fellow McConnell Scholars.
