Much More than a Scholarship

As I stepped into the McConnell interviews during my senior year of high school I had a pretty good idea of what the program had to offer - prominent speakers, all expense paid trips to Washington DC and China, and a full scholarship. However, I failed to realize some of the experiences that I would have, and what they would mean to me.

I realized just how unique these opportunities were when I presented the Louisville Slugger bat to Joe Biden for his signature. We spoke with him for quite a while covering current events to words of wisdom. He was personable, candid, and genuine in our small group meeting. At times, I had to remind myself that he was one of the most powerful and influential leaders in the world because of the way that he interacted with the Scholars.

I look forward to traveling to China in just over one week, yet another opportunity that I am thankful for. The world is changing rapidly and China will be a key player in the future. I'm glad that Senator McConnell had the vision to add this international component to the already prestigious program.

I consider myself blessed to have had three educational years of development and I'm excited to see what new opportunities and experiences I will have as I enter my senior year as a McConnell Scholar!
