An Open Letter to My Hometown

Emma Lawson ('21)
To my home on Mackville Road… thank you for the many memories. For twenty years of laughter, longevity, loss, and love. For providing the foundation to my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and five other generations of Lawsons. For watching me grow up along with all my many dogs.

To my swing-set… thank you for being my cloud in the sky and shoulder for me to cry on. For all the dreams dreamed and the music played. For daring me to push further and sing at the top of my lungs.

To my farm across the road… thank you for being my heritage and upbringing. Teaching me the importance of hard work and determination with farm equipment and animals. For always being Kentucky Proud.

To the “thrill hills”… thank you for scaring my reckless sixteen year old self. From 10-60 MPH and double yellow lines, I know you like the back of my hand. For carrying my family safely each day until our very last. For being the road less traveled but forever my road home.

To Idle Hour Park… thank you for teaching me the importance of teamwork on and off the softball field. For the Sweet-Tarts, Braves, Reds, and the WC Commanderettes. For the grass-stained pants and the gatorade soaked shirts.

To my church… thank you for displaying the love of Jesus to me and the community. For being my Wednesday nights, Vacation Bible Schools, and Sunday mornings and Sunday nights. For driving my love of music and providing me a stage to perform. Continuously reminding me of my purpose in life.

To Washington County Elementary, Middle & High School… thank you for being my second home. For providing me with mentors, friends, and a community I can always lean on. For instilling my love of learning and reminding me that it is ok to be a book nerd.

To my graduating class of 120… thank you for being my second family. For crafting my greatest hellos and toughest goodbyes. For Friday night lights and AP tests. For the class of 2017.

To Main Street… thank you for being my “3-5.” For providing me with professional and personal development from freshman through senior year. For Mattingly, Simms, Robinson & McCain, PLLC, Springfield State Bank, Washington County Clerk’s Office, Sheriff’s Office, and the Post Office. For all of my friends that I had the privilege to be “smiley” and “blondie.”

To Springfield… thank you for supporting me in all of my local, state, and national endeavors. For making me proud to call you my neighbor and always welcoming me back with open arms. For never giving up on a small town girl with big city ambitions.

To Washington County… thank you for never letting me leave without being reminded that I will always have a place to return. For The Burg, Mackville, Springfield, and Willisburg. Of all 120 Kentucky counties, I am proud to call you my humble abode.

Here’s to you my home on Mackville Road. Here’s to coming home.
