I have never considered the second Sunday in February to be my Superbowl. No, my Superbowl takes place just one week prior. It has all the elements of the Superbowl most would look forward to: sitting down for hours to watch, everyone rooting for one person or another to win, a performance that each person doesn’t want to admit they are most excited for. Yet in my Superbowl, cleats are replaced with Dolce and Gabbana heels, and the Vince Lombardi Trophy is replaced with countless golden record players. The Grammy Awards each and every year brings together the greatest artists of our time to perform and be rewarded for their incredible accomplishments. The Grammy Awards are my Super Bowl and this year's awards went above and beyond what I ever could have expected. As I sat surrounded by some of the people I love most in the world, I wanted to reflect on what made this show in particular so incredible.
Billy Joel performed his first new song in over 3 decades.
All nine televised Grammy awards were won by a female artist for the first time in history.
Luke Combs's surprise performance of Fast Car with the one and only Tracy Chapman.
Taylor Swift won her 13th Grammy and announced a new album before winning Album of the Year for her album “Midnights”.
Miley Cyrus after twenty years in the business won both her first and second Grammy.
Over 30 nations across the globe were represented in the nominees.
A touching tribute to the lives lost at the Hamas Nova Massacre was given.
At 80 years old Joni Mitchell Made her Grammy debut.
Celine Dion announced “Album of the Year” after 5 years out of the public eye due to health conditions.
Stevie Wonder, Annie Lennox, Jon Batiste, and Fantasia Barrino led performances for the Grammys "In Memoriam" segment, paying tribute to Tony Bennett, Sinéad O'Connor, Clarence Avant, and Tina Turner, respectively.
It is because of each of these people, who have shaped both the music industry as well as the world around them, that I consider the Grammy Awards my Superbowl. While I will continue to sit down on the second Sunday in February and watch the big game, it will never compare to the red carpet, the jaw-dropping performances, and the touching sentiments of the Grammy Awards.
