Of all the roads I have traveled and all the paths I have crossed, none have shaped me as greatly as those in my hometown of Jackson County, Kentucky. What I once saw as a prison for thought and ambition has reinvented itself over the years, now holding one of the fondest places in my heart. For all it has given to me over the years, I feel the need to express at least a portion of my gratitude. With that being said, Jackson County, this one’s for you.
“The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home.” When I reflect on Jackson County, I can think of no better description than this very lyric. I picture the mountains scattered with trees displaying their best reds, yellows, and oranges for the fall. I see the sole stoplight and the friends who wave to me from the other side of the street. I think of the red, white, and blue gym that captured my Friday nights. I think of the after-school ice cream dates, the late night drives, and the loving familiarity with almost everyone you encounter.
I continue to ponder and I remember the strength of the people, pushing to move past difficult times. I remember compassion that wraps the souls of those hurting like a warm hug from a friend. I remember a golden ray of light shining from the eyes of those asking how you have been with a genuine desire to know. I remember tradition that is passed down from generations back, promoting hard work and character over society’s idea of “success.”
I see my parents daring me to follow my dreams. I see my brother growing into the shoes he is destined to fill. I see my grandmother displaying the truest acts of unselfish love. I see my grandfather demonstrating how to be a friend to all. I see my teachers giving lessons both in the classroom and in the book of life. I see my church opening its doors for my weary soul. I see people everywhere living simply, but loving elaborately.
I love that you showed me how to respect my roots. I love that you taught me how to cherish family. I love that you paint a portrait of togetherness. I love that you are an example of the greatness of Kentucky. I love that you bring out what I love about myself– a passion for truly knowing others, an appreciation of simplicity, a determination to create opportunities, and most importantly, a heart for those around me.
Jackson County, all that I am is a product of you. I will forever carry the memories and lessons I learned in these mountains. I can only hope for many more. Your beauty often goes unnoticed by those of the outside, but all who have had the pleasure of calling you home recognize your value. For all you have offered me, I will happily sing one song for my old Kentucky home.
