A Cover Letter to Adulthood

Nicole Fielder ('19)

At the end of my senior year of high school, I wrote my graduation speech as a letter of resignation. Now as a senior in college, it only feels appropriate to write my final blog looking forward to my next role – as an application for Adulthood.

To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Nicole Fielder, and I am writing to express my interest in a position as an Adult. I am a soon-to-be graduate of the University of Louisville with degrees in Political Science and Economics. While I understand a college degree does not necessarily qualify me for Adulthood, I have heard about this incredible opportunity since I was young, and I believe I now have the experience and skills to fill such a position.
In my time at UofL, I have served in quite a few roles – all ones that feel small upon reflection now. The most rewarding aspect of my tenure has been my work ensuring that students are empowered to be civically engaged. I have grown in the aspects that college advertises: critical thinking, time management, communication, travel, and professional development. However, I am more grateful for the growth I could have never expected: big-picture thinking, friendship management, advocacy, community investment, and development of my concept of self. I have read much and listened too little, but I have taken notes even when I didn’t have to. I am still growing in many ways – the current project is purposeful empathy – but I am excited about getting to put all these skills to use. This position as an Adult will build on my past experiences while also furnishing new skills and a fresh understanding of the world.
If you would like to contact me, please do so at nicole.fielder@louisville.edu. I look forward to connecting. Thank you for your consideration.

With gratitude,
Nicole Fielder
